TRAVEL TIPS

Air Travel

Most visitors to Santa Fe fly into Albuquerque, home of the region's main airport. From here, ground transportation is available to both Santa Fe (65 miles away) and Taos (130 miles), although most visitors rent a car.

Albuquerque's airport is served by all major U.S. airlines and has direct flights from most major West Coast and Midwest cities and a few cities on the East Coast (JFK in New York City on JetBlue, Atlanta on Delta, Washington Dulles on United, and Orlando and Baltimore-Washington on Southwest). However, Santa Fe's charmingly small and handily located airport has ramped up commercial service in recent years and now has direct flights on American Airlines from Dallas and Los Angeles, Great Lakes Airline from Denver and Phoenix, and United from Denver. Because there's less competition, flights into Santa Fe tend to cost a bit more than those to Albuquerque, but the convenience is well worth the extra expense for many travelers. If you're venturing north from Santa Fe up to Taos, you might also consider flying into Denver, which is an hour or two farther than Albuquerque (the drive is stunning) but offers a huge selection of direct domestic and international flights.

Flying time between Albuquerque and Dallas is 1 hour and 45 minutes; Los Angeles, 2 hours; Chicago, 2 hours and 45 minutes; New York, 4 to 4½ hours (direct, which is available only on JetBlue; factor in another hour if connecting).

Long layovers don't have to be only about sitting around or shopping. These days they can be about burning off vacation calories. Check out www.airportgyms.com for lists of health clubs that are in or near many U.S. and Canadian airports.
