TRAVEL TIPS

When to Go

High Season: Mid-December to April

San José’s 3,800-foot altitude keeps temperatures pleasant and springlike year-round. The capital’s status as a business-travel destination means lodging rates rarely vary throughout the year. The dry season literally blows in with a change in wind patterns that make December and January brisk, but sunny. February warms up; by March and April, the heat and dust pick up considerably.

Low Season: May to mid-November

The wet season moves in gradually, with manageable brief afternoon showers from May through July. August becomes wetter. September and October might mean constant rain for days at a time, and navigating a traffic-clogged city in a torrential rush-hour downpour is little fun.

Shoulder Season: Mid-November to mid-December

Rains wind down by mid-November and you’ll even experience a bit of a nip in the air—it’s still the tropics, though—as the city decks itself out for the holidays. The big influx of tourists won’t arrive until just before Christmas, so this is the time to enjoy the capital at its best.
